old made new

if you find fabulous art framed in outdated wood, find a way to make it new again! this fabulous bathroom art looked entirely too outdated until i gave the frame a new coat of paint! After a new coat of paint and some sandpaper I have an old piece made new!

Garland

Some fall season flair! These fabulous leaves were a thrift store find! Wrap any sort of garland around your stair railing and add instant seasonal appeal! Also shown in the picture is the cutest dog in the world, Lion. ; )

A great example of mixing old with new! The three drawer piece was found at a flea market, and what a great use of an old lard tin! a perfect side table for a small space. And of course vintage coke crates create fabulous shelving all the while the color of the lamp tin and new poster bring a pop of life and coordination! Great picking and decorating! Gumball machine

I picked up this gumball machine at a garage sale! I just had to have it because it reminds me of my Dad. My dad has an old blue gumball machine, one of the few things he has had since he was a child. It resides in his garage adding a sense of childhood to the place where so much hard work occurs. 

Paint

Paint can go a long way! I bought this piece in its original worn 70's condition at a garage sale for 5 dollars. It was shiny wood and very outdated. It appealed to me because it looked like it could be useful! It could serve as an end table, as a bench and of course as storage. After a sand down and some paint instantly it was ready for a home in the year 2013! This piece was recently sold by Curio's Cabinet, located in the Foothills flea market in Fort Collins Colorado. The flood

Trick-or-treat!?

Owls are all the rage right now, so if you happen to have a couple on display through the house be sure to pull them forward for this spooky time of year! Also plastic pumpkins with a battery candle or built in plug light are great to draw in the trick-or-treaters! 

animals and books

Old stuffed animals are fabulous! So much wear and tear from the loving they have had really gives each one its own story and character. Stuffed animals are great on a bed or a chair but can really add a new element when they are put on shelves amongst your other treasures! Old books had such great attention to detail! Front face a book or two on a shelving unit to display the beautiful artwork on the cover. 

garage sale find!

I found this great hand crafted pillow at a garage sale! I loved it and could not part with it! It is made mostly of a pleather and the dogs, turtle and other detail work is done with yarn. I will keep the pillow safe in my home probably for the rest of forever. Such a unique piece! Thank you to the maker whomever he or she may be!

functional turns fashionable

An old measuring tape turns decoration once it is formed into a star! Add a little bit of glue to help it hold its form and functional turns fashionable instantly! So cute to hang from a garage or shop door!

A crafty little project

Burlap material is all the rage! Use a paint pen or even a marker to write something that is special to you! Add the burlap onto an old container with some glue and you have an immediately updated storage space! You can be extra creative and attach a flower for extra flair! Flowers can be made but it's even easier to buy a pre-made flower in the scrap-booking section at you local craft store!

Picture books can have such beautiful images! Sometimes the images are so beautiful it makes you wish that there were a way to enjoy them even when you don't have time to sit and open a book. If you can get your hands on another copy of the book or if you don't mind sacrificing your copy there is a way to enjoy the pictures everyday year round! Carefully cut the pictures you desire to see and frame them! Instant wall art for your kid's room, your room or to give as a gift! Think of the childhood memories that may come back to you or a guest when you see a picture from a favorite childhood book on the wall! What a great conversation piece!

I found this metal hamper in a flea market and later found the metal corner shelves in an entirely different location. Now my laundry bin is also for display and decoration! Gotta love vintage finds that are both functional and fabulous!

An old jar can be so useful! Love putting my collections into them so that the items can all be displayed in one compact location! Two vintage cookie jars surround a jar full of sequined, hand made, fruit! So appropriate for the kitchen and the shine of the sequins really attract the eye!

This large street advertisement was a great buy at a flea market! Such a large piece makes a true statement in a room. Amazing that businesses would set something so heavy outside of their store each morning! Oh the good ol' days!

Fabrics can add so much to a room! This plain yellow couch gets an instant face lift with some throw pillows and quilts! Mix and matching patterns is fine just remember to stay on point with your color scheme!

Flea market shopping is fun for the whole family! With a treasure for everyone there are stories to be told and laughs to be had! A lovely picture of my Grandma enjoying a vintage hat.

Serving Art

Old serving trays came in so many colors and patterns! When you find one in great condition you can learn to really enjoy the artful design. use hot glue and wire to make the tray a piece of wall art! Because the tray is metal it can also be used as a magnet board which is so fun! Great for a kitchen! 

Trick or Treat?

A ceramic mouse gets a lift of realism when displayed with candy corn! Don't forget that the treats are a big part of the up and coming Holiday! An edible display is interactive, therefore it will get lots of attention at your big party!

Re-do a dresser and give it your own flair! Paint and some shabby sanding can give new life to an old looking dresser. Buy new handles and give an instant update or use string or fabric to create a look that reflects you perfectly!

Garage sale finds make an adorable shabby chic sitting area! What can you piece together for your outdoor space?!

Creative use of fabric

While decorating be creative with your use of fabrics and objects! This piece of skull fabric is actually meant to be a window valance. Since I found it at a garage sale I only had one and decided it would be best used to liven up a white table! And who says trees are only for Christmas!? 

vintage dog bed

I bought this old suitcase despite it't falling apart. The color was fabulous and the price was right. When I got it home I was not sure what to do with it and so it ended up getting stored in the shed. As my dog Lion and I were organizing the shed Lion looked like he needed a place to rest. I went ahead and tore the suitcase apart the rest of the way, threw a pillow in it and bingo! Instant dog bed!

Vintage and Manly

Collecting vintage is a man's game too! Gotta love old tins from things that would have been found in the garage or old bottles from a favorite soda! Display it all on an old soda crate!

layers

I always think that paint can really do a lot for an old piece of furniture! In the case shown above I found a small table at the goodwill that had seen better days. The table's legs were no longer attached properly and what was one time wood, had been spray painted several shades of gold in a very unprofessional blotchy way. The wood on the top of the table was showing through the paint where the table had been water stained and had swollen. Seeing the potential I took the small table home with me. I fixed its legs, sanded it down and began to give it a new coat of paint. As I was freshening up the table I began to fall in love with the pattern that the wear on this table took. The water damage formed a sort of cross and when I had sanded out the swollen parts of the wood this made the cross even more noticeable. I had begun painting the table from the ground up and before I knew it the table had created itself. A fantastic piece of art that has so many layers of stories untold.

Jen's Antique Mall

As soon as I graduated from college Jen, owner of her own Antique Mall was my push towards my goals and dreams. I just so happened to walk into her store and felt a rush of inspiration and love. Jen is a fabulous woman who is so encouraging and knowledgeable. I have her to thank for getting me into the "junking" business! Jen's Antique Mall is such a quaint little store with a treasure for everyone! All of the vendors in the store have very different style and taste! While shopping in this store you will feel so at home with Jen. She is so personable and helpful! You will love visiting this small town and when you find your treasure you will be so proud of where it came from!

Jack Pot!!

It's all about the thrill of the hunt! I am addicted to rummaging through other people's "junk" and finding what I find to be treasure! Every once in a while a person will come across a pile of "junk" that is just their style. The above items are from my jack-pot day! A garage sale where I literally could have picked any one item and would have been thrilled with it! Instead I was privileged enough to pick all that my wallet would allow me! What a blast! I wish I could have bought it all! It's a stop like the one I had at that garage sale that will really lure you into the rummaging addiction! I hope that you too get to have a jack-pot day while you are out rummaging! Treasure is great, and is even better when it's found in an abundance!

More decorative pillows!

An old trunk as we all know is great for blanket storage! But if you remove the hinges off the lid of the trunk you can flip it over and also have a great spot for a pillow display! This way your blankets are still stored in one place and are easy to access, and you have more room for decorative pillows! Pillows are a great way to add instant color and seasonal appeal!

I remember when I was little and my Mom would ask if my brother and I wanted to have a flea market day! Of course we did! Even when I was little flea marketing was my favorite pass time. My Mom would always let us pick out a treasure or two or three. She was and is the absolute greatest! The Foothills Flea Market on flea market row in Fort Collins Colorado is a stop you don't want to miss! The booths are all very unique and well priced! It is nearly impossible to leave empty handed! If you love to treasure hunt, make sure to mark this location with an x on you map!

Color!

When creating a Holiday display, don't' feel restricted to use only "Holiday themed" items. This means in order to create a great Holiday display you don't need to run out and buy all of the themed merchandise you can! Of course having pieces that are themed help to get the point across but color can do the same thing! While creating the display choose items that follow along with the general color theme of the Holiday! For example for Halloween Choose items that have oranges and blacks in them. To add a quick Holiday look to an item you already own you can find a way to attach a bow of colored ribbon or add a colored flower! Drawing the eye to the right colors will make your display seem instantly Holiday themed! Color is the key to quick and easy Holiday flair!

These fabulous paintings on felt can make great collection! The colors are so vibrant and the subjects are so widespread anyone can find one or two to fall in love with! When the paintings are gathered on one wall or within one room, this can make a stunning statement! Get these felt paintings while they are still easy to find and affordable! Begin your collection ahead of the trends because soon it will be realized that this felt art is indeed treasure to hunt for! 

This fabulous rocking train is hand carved out of wood. I found this treasure at a community garage sale in the mountains. What an amazing piece of folk art! There isn't another one like it and that's a fact. A treasure like this has so many untold stories! Was it a gift from a grandfather? Was it carved by a carving hobbyist? There's no telling. The couple I bought it from did not have much of a story on it either. They found it in a flea market and had been displaying it in their garage. But like most people do, after years of it gathering dust, they determined it clutter and were ready to sell it to the next admirer. I too have enjoyed my possession of this one of a kind train, however I think it deserves more love than just sitting on a shelf. For some little girl or boy this is going to the their "velveteen rabbit." This little rocking train is meant for a child to love and play with and until the rightful owner comes along to find it, it waits...

When decorating our house for the first time it was a sudden realization that furniture does not have to be confined to certain uses. A book shelf can hold more than just books, it can hold a television!  A trunk can double as storage as well as a unique coffee table! Decorating is all about thinking outside the box! Unique thinking can really make your one of a kind treasures have a bold look!

addicted to junk

As I am admittedly addicted to junk I must have an outlet. I cannot keep buy buy buying without sell sell selling anything!!! Therefore I do indeed "flip" items. It is what one might consider to be a small business, however I am still trying to figure out where the money is, and since I don't make money, its more that I am just trying to break even; and make space in my house for new fabulous things. (A big part of the joy of shopping vintage, is allowing the home to be ever-changing) I call this outlet Curio's Cabinet, and in Curio's Cabinet one can find so many fabulous things for the home! Vintage comedy

Old wooden crates are so fabulous! They can be used as storage for a craft room or entry way! Wooden crates can also be used as shelves if you mount them onto your wall! As shown in the picture below wooden crates can also be used as display boxes. This Dried Prune crate is being used to display holiday soaps, floral remnants from a relatives wedding and ornaments from a friends wedding which were oringanally used in a centerpiece. What I love most about this display is its placement. It is on the counter of my bathroom. This is the perfect example of the subtle comedy that can be found in a home full of vintage things. Most guests would not think anything of the wooden crate but if one were to have the time to really think about it, they too would find the comedy. If someone is smiling as they leave the bathroom I am often left to wonder if while relieving themselves they happened to be in the room long enough to find the comedy in my dried prune box. Placement can be so important when trying to make a statement, especially when the statement is spelled out right in front of you!
